All fully paid up members of the Society are eligible to enter the Society’s competitions. Each entrant may submit a maximum of two prints, two slides and/or two digital images. These must be current work which has not been used previously in these competitions and can be of any subject.
There are four open competitions each season, each competition has two sections
PRINTS - Each entry must bear the author’s name and a title. There is no stipulated minimum size for print entries but for guidance it should measure not less than 25cms along the longest side of the print (excluding the mount) to enable the audience to see the work.
Should you wish your work to be considered to represent the club in Federation or PAGB Exhibitions/Competitions then it will need to conform to the maximum mount size of 50 cms x 40 cms - with the print contained therein.
PROJECTED IMAGES
SLIDES – Can still be submitted for Competition - but will be scanned and projected as a data image in amongst the Digital Images.
Slides should be in a 5 cm square mount, spotted in the bottom left hand corner when viewed from the front and bear the authors name and a title.
Slides will not be accepted for inclusion after the closing date for entries which is 7 days prior to the competition.
DIGITAL IMAGES – Images may be captured by digital camera, digital scanning (by author or lab) off negatives, slides or prints.
The Images will be projected by Data Projector in landscape format at a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. Images must, therefore, be no more than 1024 pixels wide and no more than 768 pixels high, including any border or frame around the image.
If your image is less than the maximum in any direction, the canvas size should be enlarged to 1024 x 768 pixels and the unused area should be filled with black. It will then be seen to its best advantage when projected on the screen.
Images should be saved as ’jpg’ or ‘jpeg’ - The FILENAME of each must be the TITLE as saved on the CD/USB Memory Stick and be preceded by the image number as follows:
Image 01 (title)…
Image 02 (title)…
Entries submitted on CD should be clearly labelled with the authors name, contact telephone number and e-mail address (if applicable) by using a firm permanent marker pen on the top surface of the disc. All CD’s will be returned to the author after each competition.
Entries submitted on a USB Memory Stick should be identified by the author’s name. All USB Memory sticks will be returned to the author after each competition.
Entries can also be submitted as a file attachment to an Email to :
All entries received will be acknowledged by a return email.
The judge will comment on all work presented and be asked to pick out the top 10 in the both the print and projected image sections. In the case of the projected images the top slides will be assessed in conjunction with the digital images for the judge to decide the final top 10.
The scores for these will be:
1st 11 points
2nd 10 points
3rd 9 points
4th 8 points
5th 7 points
6th 6 points
7th 5 points
8th 4 points
9th 3 points
10th 2 points
All work entered will gain a minimum of one point for the cumulative score for the yearly club competition.
These scores are cumulative, i.e. if one author gets 3rd place and 6th place, in one of the sections, his/her points will be 15 to count toward the competition trophy for that section.
The overall winner, for each section, will hold the trophy for one year.
The Society reserves the right on all images submitted in any given season to be retained on File for use in external competitions to represent the Society in which case the Society will bear the cost of either reproducing it as a print or slide having first sought the authors permission to do so. This will be donated to the author once used. The winning images from each section will be posted on the website.
Any image submitted into this competition may not subsequently be reproduced and entered again in another medium. (i.e – a print cannot be entered again as a slide or digital image - a slide cannot be entered again as a print or digital image – nor a digital image be entered as a print or slide) – or so similar as to be almost identical are ineligible.
The final image must be the photographer’s own work including the original image and/or parts thereof, by implication the photographer owns the copyright to all parts of the image.
